Items Cast in Epoxy Resin and Solid Cast Resin Surfaces
Cast Items
I’m sure you’ve all seen images or videos online of items cast in epoxy resin, ranging from smaller keepsakes/mementoes such as wedding flowers or trinkets up to the sometimes ridiculous and larger items such as a Mercedes G-Wagon (read more here) in a huge block of resin.
Different types of resin can be used for such applications with the most common and probably the most versatile being epoxy resin.
Epoxy resins come in two parts (A+B) which when combined and mixed go through a thermal reaction which binds the polymers and transforms the clear liquid into a solid.
Once you have the clear liquid, you can add pigments and other additives such as mica powders to create different effects or leave it in its clear state to simply act as a housing rather than to add any extra visual element.
Using epoxy resin like this is a great way of isolation something in a display that will last for a very, very long time however, there are some restrictions.
Due to the thermal reaction that happens in the resin during curing it is not normally possible to cast at great depths in one pour (the G-Wagon above was a special project with a specially formulated resin and still had some issues and failures).
To get around this most resin makers will layer the resin in multiple pours with a depth of around 40-50mm.
The largest item that we have made (so far!) at Resino used 650kg of resin and needed to be poured in 8 layers over an area of around 2sq/m to get a depth of 400mm.
Bigger, Deeper Pours!…
We have recently been testing a new resin which we have developed here at Resino, which will enable us to pour in much greater volumes and depths. With current testing, we have been able to pour at up to 350mm depth in one go.
We have a wealth of experience in casting items in resin and would be happy to look at any projects or requirements that you may have.
If you are unsure just get in touch to see what’s possible.
Some ideas of items that can be encased in resin:
Flowers
Display Products
Art
Memorabilia
Surfaces and Finishes
Sometimes, when choosing materials for interior surfaces and finishes the more traditional or standard options can feel restricting, being often limited by the capabilities of the products used.
With epoxy resin, it is possible to create a huge array of different colours, effects, opacities and finishes making for an extremely versatile product that can also be poured into complex moulds/forms, sometimes without any joins.
Here’s an example of a piece that we created for a client that was poured in one go into a bespoke mould to create a vanity/sink unit with a very specific look and feel.
The resin is translucent, allowing a degree of lighting to transfer through and with the item being cast in one single pour there it was very strong requirin gno added supports other than the rear wall fixings.
It would be very difficult or extremely expensive to try and create an item like this in any other material, this enabled us to meet the design vision and requirements of the client without sacrifices.
With designers, trends and fashion forever moving and looking in new directions we believe that resin has the capabilities to offer alternative solutions, especially when paired with the vision and experience that we offer at Resino.
Another example here is a project for which we were tasked with creating an extension for a reception desk which will house a record player.
Here is a look at the form used
And finally here are some samples from other previous projects showing different colours, opacities and effects/finishes:
Applications for solid cast resin:
Kitchen worktops or islands
Bartops
Reception counter
Shelving
Tabletops
Desks
